Una de las leyendas vivientes de la música, "Mamá África"
Miriam Makeba es uno de los grandes tesoros musicales, una artista que ha ganado reconocimiento internacional por sus actuaciones en vivo y sus grabaciones como así también por su participación en distintos movimientos que luchan por los derechos humanos en África y en otros continentes. Después de su apasionado discurso anti-apartheid ante las Naciones Unidas, en 1963, Makeba debió continuar su carrera artística lejos de su país natal.
La emperatriz de la canción africana y Mama Africa, Miriam Makeba, llevó la música africana al gran público en los anos 60. Nacida en 1932 en Johannesburgo, Sudáfrica, Makeba grabó su single de debut "Lakutshona Llange" (1953) como parte de los Manhattan Brothers. "Pata Pata" (1956), quizás la canción más importante de la artista, fue escrita por Dorothy Masuka y se convirtió en un gran exito en América en 1967. La preocupación de Makeba por los derechos humanos y la justicia política le han valido grandes honores y reconocimiento como líder humanitaria en todo el mundo. Cuando regresó a Sudáfrica, en 1990, Nelson Mandela y otros líderes del movimiento anti-apartheid le rindieron tributo por sus luchas en el exilio. (Putumayo World Music)
Makeba colaboró con Harry Belafonte, cantando juntos en importantes eventos y editando el álbum "Miriam Makeba and Harry Belafonte" en 1972. "Homeland" su ultimo disco se editó en el ano 2000 y es una verdadera joya, nominado para un Grammy como Mejor Álbum de Música del Mundo.
