REBECKA TÖRNQVIST - A NIGHT LIKE THIS (1993)

With its sophisticated, jazzy sound, A Night Like This meant a big breakthrough for Rebecka Törnqvist upon its release in 1993. The 29-year-old debutante sounded extraordinarily confident and secure, and the backing consisted of a big part of the Swedish jazz elite, including names like Per "Texas" Johansson, Anders Widmark, Esbjörn Svensson, and Pl Svenre. The latter also produced the album together with Törnqvist. Many of these musicians, like Johansson, would in a few years become known outside jazz circles, but it was Törnqvist and this album in particular that were crucial in starting the '90s wave of female jazz vocalists in Sweden, including names like Viktoria Tolstoy, and were important in vitalizing the interest for the whole genre. Despite what it meant for the general popularity of jazz in Sweden, in itself this album is hard to place as either jazz or pop, and it crosses the borders in each and every song. Overall, the instrumentation and sound are jazzy, while the approach is rather more pop. This is the jazziest of Törnqvist's solo albums. When Swedish jazz-pop had proved itself marketable, much of the scene in the late '90s became quite watered down, but Törnqvist stood out as a skilled songwriter and A Night Like This is, perhaps, the album where her talent for songwriting is most obvious.

ARTAUD BESSON
Vincent Artaud is a musical alchemist. Originally a bass player, he does much more on each of his solo albums playing bass (of course!) but also guitars, programmings, voices. He also arranges and composes a music that is as breath-taking as it's hard to describe... There are elements of contemporary classical, jazz and a cinematic quality a few artist can reach.
Jazz is clearly his background, his roots but reducing his music to just jazz would be silly as Artaud manages to create climates that are not only driven by jazz main force: improvisation.
After just two albums, Artaud has established himself as one of the more promising forces of the future of french avant-garde without losing an inch of his melodic concerns in music.
A great artist, a musical alchemist.

Here's a brand new duet and their debut album. The music is jazz but jazz stepping out of jazz usual standards. Airelle Besson (she's a girl) plays both the trumpet and the violin while her musical companion, Sylvain Rifflet, does the saxophones, clarinets and keyboards. With support of a talented backing band (Pierre Durand on guitars, Eric Jacot on double bass and Nicolas Larmignat on drums) those two young musicians mix (free) jazz & rock in a very satisfying way. The opening track, for instance, evokes Van Der Graaf Generator's sax-player David Jackson. There are many more influences to be found on Rockingchair and as I don't want you to spoil your pleasure I will say no more but I have no doubt each modern jazz lover will find music to suit his taste. A promising brand new duet, a must try.
