Archie Shepp
was born in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, on May 24, 1937, but raised in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, where he studied piano, clarinet and alto saxophone before focusing on tenor saxophone (he occasionally plays soprano saxophone).
Shepp is best known for his passionately Afrocentric music of the late sixties which focused on highlighting the injustices faced by the African race, as well as for his work with the New York Contemporary Five and his collaborations with his "New Thing" contemporaries, most notably Cecil Taylor and John Coltrane.

The late Bill Evans was among the truly great pianists in the jazz pantheon. Evans's measured, introspective approach interwove classical and blues influences, was cerebral as well as deeply poignant, proving an influence on, among others, Miles Davis, Keith Jarrett, and Brazilian-born jazz pianist Eliane Elias. What makes SOMETHING FOR YOU an event is the presence of bassist Marc Johnson, whose nimble, lithe playing was part of the last edition of the Bill Evans Trio; Joey Baron, who can wail with Bill Frisell and John Zorn, but is dynamically delicate here; and Elias's moderately dusky vocals gracing nearly a third of the album. Elias shares Evans's concept of graceful conciseness, never playing a barrage of notes when a few judiciously placed ones will do just fine.

Album by Claire Martin, as she is a genuine jazz vocalist who can actually sing in tune, with feeling.
Her feeling is heartfelt on this new CD, as it's a tribute to Shirley Horn, one of her favourite singers, who died in 2005. Claire evinces the same sort of care about songs as Shirley was famous for. Claire doesn't imitate Shirley directly, although their voices both have a similar breathy delivery.
This could make the album samey but variety is provided by the accompanying musicians. Pianist Gareth Williams is an eternally sensitive accompanist, while Jim Mullen and Gerard Presencer add varied solos and backings to several tracks. Note, for instance, Jim Mullen's bluesy solos on Trav'llin' Light and L. A. Breakdown.

Swedish singer Rigmor Gustafsson's three previous ACT recordings have all concentrated on other composers' material and all had titles including the word 'you' (On My Way to You, I Will Wait for You and Close to You); this is a departure in that it contains nothing but originals (some co-written), but it continues the appropriately intimate, confessional 'you' theme.
Gustafsson has an easy, confiding manner and a tastefully soulful, flexible voice that is perfectly formed for the bluesier elements of her repertoire, but also has enough jazz nous to enable her to cope with the odd ballad, and enough subtlety and sensitivity to make the jazz-folky Swedish-language song 'Medan du v?ntar' touching.
Her programme is thus intelligently varied in tempo as well as in emotional range all played with discreet but powerful aplomb by an accomplished band propelled by American drummer Eric Harland and, concluding as it does with the Bacharach-influenced title track, this is a bright, enjoyable album.

Betrayed, a political thriller starring Tom Berenger and Debra Winger, is the kind of soundtrack you would get if you asked Garth Brooks to score a movie: music heavily influenced by country 'n western and American blues where harmonicas and electric guitars are the instruments of choice. It may come as a surprise that Bill Conti, the man behind Rocky, The Right Stuff and Masters of the Universe wrote this, because it's about as far removed from Gonna Fly Now as it's possible to get. It all just moves along quite nicely, all the while dominated by the country rock orchestrations but with a few choice highlights, like 'The Way', 'Another Way' and 'Marry Me', which feature slightly more lyrical piano elements and a subdued acoustic guitar; 'Riding to Work', 'There Ain't No Going Back' and especially 'Passing Time', which highlight John Goux's funky electric guitar solos...
