His guitar-slinging contributions to the Yardbirds having dwarfed those of Eric Clapton or Jimmy Page, Mrs. Beck's bad boy spent the next several years playing blues-rock (the Jeff Beck Group with Rod Stewart), soul-rock (the second edition of that band), and leading a power trio. Then, he made this all-instrumental album, which was a huge 1975 success. Produced by George Martin, the nine-song session finds Beck fronting a keyboards-bass-drums outfit, augmented by some tastefully unobtrusive string arrangements. Call it a jazz-fusion album at your own risk. While Beck's playing is less in-your-face than his previous efforts, all the fierce attack, thick tone, microtonal bends, distortion, feedback, vibrato, sustain, sonic hoodoo, and rhythmic and harmonic creativity that the man's fans have come to know and love can be heard here. "Freeway Jam" boasts the most memorable melody and thus remains a Classic Rock staple to this day. "Cause We've Ended As Lovers"--written by Stevie Wonder--is Beck's gorgeous tribute to one of his own guitar-heroes, the now-deceased Roy Buchanan.

If you want to hear the Elektric band, this is the album you just have to hear first! This album is the essence of everything Corea's trio was and probaly will be. Besides just completely sounding straight out of the 1980's, the possibly worst decade for music; this album, musically is just fantastic. Obviously the acoustic and straight ahead fans won't like this, and right from the title most of them are turned away. I was one of them. But then I got into this little thing called fusion and found out that over time, that it evolved in such a way to produce great albums like this. The Chick Corea Elektric Band was one of those colorful jazz groups in the 80's to just turn on nice melodic jazz/rock/pop/fusion music. No matter how the critics and jazz purists try to catogorize this into flimsy worthless jazz idioms, I must say, as a lover of jazz of any kind (excluding that awful R&B influenced popular radio deamed as 'smooth jazz') I aboslutely love the music on this disk. All musicians were top notch at the time, and went on to become great successers. Chick is absolutely spoken for as John Pattitucci and Dave Weckl prove to be two of jazz's greatest rhythm team players. King Cockroach will always be my favorite. And India Town has one of those distinctive melodies. Overall, the album is just a nostalgic trip through the 80's, but never-the-less, it's great jazz!

Stevie Wonder spent almost three years working on this album and the time was well spent. The music is probably the most personal and outspoken of his career. He sings about his childhood in songs like "I Wish" & "Easy Goin' Evening", his heroes in "Sir Duke", the birth of his daughter in "Isn't She Lovely" and while "Contusion" is an instrumental the title is a reference to the life-threatening auto accident he was involved in. Mr. Wonder has always been a strong voice for the civil rights movement and the struggles for his race's equality and he expresses his feelings on those matters in "Village Ghetto Land", "Pastime Paradise" & "Joy Inside My Tears". He also gives us a history lesson in "Black Man". "Love's In Need Of Love Today" and "Have A Talk With God" are pleas for togetherness and understanding. Mr. Wonder could always write great love songs and they are here as well in the forms of "Ebony Eyes", "As", "Knocks Me Off My Feet" and others. As I've just mentioned, the album broaches many diverse subjects, but it all comes together in the end. Usually on double albums, there is filler, but not here. Every song serves a purpose and help create a cohesive musical statement. Stevie Wonder has been called a musical genius and this album is further proof that the title is an appropriate one.
