Cream - Royal Albert Hall: London 2-6 May 2005 (@256)
They step onto the stage of London's Royal Albert Hall: Jack Bruce, Ginger Baker, and Eric Clapton. The capacity crowd, which includes film stars Sean Penn and Jude Law, stands to greet them. Thirty-seven years after their farewell concert, the famously fiery Cream did the unthinkable --they reunited.
This double-CD collection captures highlights from the historic four-day engagement, beginning with a buoyant "I'm So Glad" and ending with a triumphant "Sunshine of Your Love". It would be churlish to suggest that Cream appears exactly as they did in the 1960s (Bruce looks a little frail), but the legendary power trio still has the goods. Bruce is still the essence of soul (a particularly rich vocal on "Politician"), while Baker is as irrepressible as ever (a rare vocal on "Pressed Rat and Warthog," percussive tour-de-force "Toad"). Then there's Clapton, who remains as much a master of the guitar as of understatement. "Thanks for waiting all these years", he quips after a slow-burning "Outside Woman Blues". The track listing is, indeed, generous, despite the absence of such Cream classics as "I Feel Free", "Strange Brew", and "Tales of Brave Ulysses".

Deep Purple - Live in Japan (1972) (@256)
(Review from progarchives.com)
An unadulterated masterpiece, loud, proud and technically amazing, "Made in Japan" is the mother of all live albums. When it was recorded, Deep Purple were at their height of their musical form, stunning audiences into submission at every live performance. However, in their case it was no mere, dumb bludgeoning in the style of many later heavy metal bands, which thought sheer volume was the only answer. Each of the members of Deep Purple was a master of his instrument (even the underrated, but always reliable bassist Roger Glover), and Ian Gillan was the voice that launched a thousand screamers. Last but not least... they had the songwriting skills to back up their musical proficiency - something in which many modern-day bands are sadly lacking.
The songs are no simple renditions of the studio tracks, but rather an excuse for the band to flex their collective muscles and showcase their individual talents. Ritchie Blackmore plays like a demon, wringing all kind of weird noises and sublime sounds from his Fender Stratocaster. Jon Lord, the Hammond god, is his perfect foil, sometimes providing a solid background for Blackmore's improvisations, sometimes pulling out all the stops and showing that he was more than a match for the Emersons and Wakemans of this world. Ian Paice's drumming is metronomical in its precision, and his spot on "The Mule" is a good example of a drum solo that avoids being boring. Glover pounds his bass stoically in the background: no Chris Squire- style "lead bassist", but a perfect partner for the impeccable Paice. Then we have Ian Gillan, handsome and wild, competing with Blackmore's guitar for the highest note on "Strange Kind of Woman", screaming his heart out on the legendary, dramatic "Child in Time".
All of the tracks are extended, dilated, chock-full of improvisation and creativity. The closing "Space Truckin'" clocks in at almost 20 minutes, a lengthy jam session including pieces of other tracks, underpinned by Jon Lord's trademark buzzsaw Hammond.
This boxed set includes the full 3 concerts played on that 3 consecutive nights in the Japan tour from which the tracks on "Made in Japan" were selected. Not only do you get the tracks which constituted "Made In Japan" but you get alternative (and equally brilliant) takes of those tracks from the other nights they performed on that tour with the addition of "Black Night" and "Speed King" which weren't in the original selection set.
Line-up :
* Ian Gillan - vocals, harmonica, percussion
* Ritchie Blackmore - guitar
* Roger Glover - bass
* Jon Lord - organ, keyboards
* Ian Paice - drums, percussion

Black Sabbath Never Say Die (1978) (@256)
After the tour for "Technical Ecstasy" Ozzy quit the band. Former Fleetwood Mac and Savoy Brown vocalist Dave Walker was brought into rehearsals in October 1977 and the band began working on new songs.
Three days before the band were due to go into the studio, Ozzy wanted to come back to the band. He wouldn't sing any of the stuff the band had written with the other guy, so it made it very difficult. Black Sabbath went into the studio with basically no songs. They'd write in the morning so they could rehearse and record at night. It was so difficult, like a conveyor belt, because the band couldn't get time to reflect on stuff. It was very difficult for Iommi to come up with the ideas and putting them together that quick.
The band's last album of the 70s, "Never Say Die" has it's own qualities and distinct sound which sets it apart from all previous Black Sabbath albums. Perhaps the most glaring example of this is the instrumental "Breakout" which sounds more like the Stan Kenton Orchestra than the kings of metal. "Air Dance" touches on other jazzy progressions which had lalways been subetly present on even ther heaviest of Sabbath numbers.
The rhythmical "Hard Road" features vocal harmonies by Butler and Iommi for the first time while "Johnny Bade" gets as dark as the band ever were. "Shock Wave" is a straight rocker with some cool wah wahed out guitar.
Don Airey shines with his Hammond organ in "Over to You". Just like in their previous album, Bill Ward takes over vocals on a single track, "Swinging The Chain". The pop metal title track "Never Say Die" put the band on the charts for the first time since 1970's Paranoid.
However tongue-in-cheek "Never Say Die" might be, it is an interesting record which should be taken on it's own rather than compared to Black Sabbath's earlier material including the previous "Technical Ecstacy".
Following the tour of the album, Black Sabbath spent nearly a year working on material for the next album. With pressure from the record label, and frustrations with Osbourne's lack of ideas coming to a head, Iommi made the decision to fire Ozzy Osbourne in 1979.
Line-up :
- Tony Iommi / Lead Guitar
- Geezer Butler / Bass
- Ozzy Osbourne / Vocals
- Bill Ward / Drums, Vocals (9)
- Don Airey / Keyboards
- John Elstar / Harmonica
- Will Malone / Brass arrangements

Deep Purple - Machine Head (1972) (25th. Anniversary Edit 1997-2CD)
Image and video hosting by TinyPic
Deep Purple were on the eve of breaking wide open when the quintet made Machine Head, a record that launched a heap of hard-rock hits, not to mention the bulk of the live album Made in Japan. No fewer than three classics were unveiled here: "Highway Star," "Space Truckin'," and their biggest hit ever, "Smoke on the Water." Ritchie Blackmore's crunchy guitar was becoming the group's trademark, and the throb that opens "Smoke on the Water" went miles in concretizing his place in the pantheon of 1970s guitar deities. But the story here is the second disc, which is composed of remixes by Roger Glover that introduce long-dormant, more-energized variations on the originals and revive separate solos...Andrew Bartlett
If you're reading this review, you probably already know what a great hard-rock classic Deep Purple's "Machine Head" was and would like to know if this deluxe edition is worth the extra cash. Yes, it is!
Disc One contains the entire original "Machine Head" LP correctly sequenced, along with a non album B-side and two slightly different remixes of different songs done for the long out-of-print Quad version of the LP. To be honest, to my ears the Quad remixes don't sound noticably different unless I have stereo headphones on, but they're nice to have.
Disc Two contains what Deep Purple bassist Roger Glover modestly refers to as "subtle" remixes. Anything but! Glover strips away the studio sheen of the original songs, leaving the original intros and endings intact. Thus, for example, we hear the band warming up to play "Highway Star" and jamming till they suddenly stop at the end of "Smoke on the Water." As you'd expect from a bass player-turned-remixer, Glover accentuates the bassier frequencies as a rule which lends these remixes a punch they didn't have in their better-known versions. Glover also substitutes previously mixed-out alternate versions of a couple of Blackmore's solos. While Ritchie Blackmore might not be delighted to hear the automobile sound effects returned to the climax of his "Highway Star" solo, lots of fans will be VERY pleased to hear bits and pieces of an alternate version of a classic album.
Some die-hard rockers might shudder at the word "remix," fearing that drum machines or synths were added. Fear not. Not one new note has been re-recorded and flown in. Everything you hear in the remix existed on the master tapes, although it may not have made it to the final version of the album as eventually released.
If you're a Purple fan, get this. And, if you aren't, I wouldn't be surprised if it turns out you like the remixes even better than the originals...B. Danno
Although purists might argue otherwise, Machine Head remains the "ultimate" Deep Purple album, the one LP that everybody knows and loves and the home, of course, to one of the greatest riffs in rock history, the majestic "Smoke on the Water." Celebrating the 25th anniversary of this leviathan's original release, bassist Roger Glover completely remastered the original tapes, turning in a stunning reappraisal of an album that past CD reissues had rendered little more than a muddy puddle. The dynamic that characterized this particular lineup of the band was, after all, built so much on light andmore shade, that to lose that was to lose most of the album's power. Glover did not simply restore the music's inherent contrasts, he elaborated on them to create one of the best sounding CDs of the entire digital age. In keeping with Machine Head's glorious reputation, this edition was expanded across two discs. While one features the original album plus three bonus cuts the period B-side "When a Blind Man Cries," and quadraphonic remixes of "Maybe I'm a Leo" and "Lazy" (both of which are more-or-less dispensable) the second rounds up an album's worth of remixes that Glover undertook during the remastering stage. It's little more than a bonus for true aficionados, but it is intriguing to hear how the album might have sounded, had Glover himself been in charge of production at the time. Fascinating, too, are the alternate guitar solos that he drops into "Maybe I'm a Leo" and "Smoke on the Water," both of which re-stage all-too-familiar numbers in a different light. As with all the anniversary remasters, Machine Head cannot be praised too highly. Unless, of course, you believe it already has been...M. Mandel

T. Rex Unchained Unreleased Recordings Vol. 1-8
T. Rex Unchained Unreleased Recordings Vol. 1-8
mp3 @ high vbr
all artwork included
The multi-volume Unchained series is quite possibly the living definition of collector's ephemera. Spanning eight 70-minute discs, the series apparently contains every demo, idea, half-idea, jam and scrap that Marc Bolan left behind. Considering that T. Rex released an astonishing number of albums, singles and non-LP B-sides between 1970 and Bolan's death in 1977, and that Demon also masterminded a series of alternate versions (including previously unreleased songs, not just alternates takes and demos) of every album between The Slider and Dandy in the Underworld, the very fact that enough unreleased music exists to fill eight discs is astonishing enough. It would have been even more impressive if the Unchained series offered some revelations, but it just confirms that Bolan was a talented man who had two ideas sleazy boogie and spacy folk-rock. Granted, he got a lot of mileage out of those two ideas, and he made a number of indisputedly classic singles and albums.
